A very wealthy client came to me as a friend of a friend. Based on the connection, I didn’t ask for my usual 50% deposit. She gave me no direction of what she wanted on her infographic:
Client: Just use your judgment.
And then, naturally:
Client: this isn’t what I expected at all. I expected like three or four pages like a portfolio.
Me: I did exactly what you asked based on the brief you gave me.
Client: Well, it’s not what I expected.
Me: If you give me more direction, I can do it exactly how you want, but I’d have to redesign the entire thing to fit multiple pages which’ll take me another couple of weeks, and I’d have to charge an extra £60.
Client: You’d charge me extra? It’s already more expensive than I thought it’d be.
Me: I’m charging you £8.50 a day.
Client: It’s just not what I expected and way more expensive than I thought.
After a month of zero response:
Me: As I really need to get paid, what I’ve decided to do is if you pay the invoice for the work I’ve done so far, I can do the entire redesign exactly how you want and I won’t charge you anything extra. All I’d ask for in return is a shout-out on your Twitter as it’d be excellent exposure.
Client: Sure, I can do that. I’ll pay you tomorrow.
And with that, I got paid; and no, I had no intention of doing any of the extra work. Feeling like a genius for finally making “exposure” work for ME.
