As a commercial photographer for 20+ years I don’t get a lot of clients refusing to pay their invoices. Not just because of the quality of my work, but because I also am quick to refuse jobs if they don’t pass the “sniff test”. But there is always one bad apple every so often.
A small chain of 6 jewelry stores hired me to shoot multiple pieces that were to be promoted for Valentines day. After delivery of the final images, they refused to pay the balance after multiple emails, phones calls and threats. Rather than incurring legal fees or losing a percentage to a collection agency, I decided on a different approach. On the Saturday before Valentines Day, I walked in to their crowded flagship store and asked to speak with the owner concerning an unpaid invoice. After being told by a couple of well dressed salespeople to bugger off, I asked again politely, but at the top of my voice so every customer knew exactly how this store treats their vendors.
I walked out with full payment in hand.
