I work in a print & design shop which can also order
engraved signs from a 3rd party vendor. One day, a customer comes up to
Client: Hello! I need a sign for my
door. But it has to be in full color.
Me: No problem! We have several options
for that. What size did you need the sign to be?
Client: It’s for my door. And it has to be
Me: Sure. We have several different
options for full color door signs. How big did you want it to be?
Client: It’s for my door! And it has to be
Me: I understand that, ma’am, but I need a
measurement for the sign, in inches.
I show her some samples. We have a binder with
physical sign samples in it, and also a computer kiosk where folks can view
design templates. She doesn’t even glance at them.
Me: We have small signs that are 2×10, or we
have premade ones that say “No Smoking,” or you can put custom text on them…
Client: IT’S FOR MY DOOR! I already have a
holder mounted to the door for it and everything. If I show you this
picture I took with my cell phone, will that help?
Me: Unfortunately no. I could make a guess,
but I could guess wrong and then you’d have to pay for a new sign. Did
you happen to have the old sign with you, or do any of these look like they’re
the right size?
Client: OH MY GOD. I don’t see how it’s
this hard! I just need a sign for my door in full color!
She stormed off and grabbed her husband, who was browsing
some other items nearby. He came over and was able to immediately answer my questions
and apologized for his wife’s behavior. Oh, and the ‘full color’ she
wanted? A blue sign with white lettering.
