I once built an online
store selling home aquatics products:
fish tanks and accessories. These included mundane items such as
buckets, pipes and tubes etc. The client supplied me with a CD (!) full of
horrible, tiny images for their products. I had to edit these monstrosities in
Photoshop to paint out the background dirt. They still looked awful and I
pointed this out to the client, but they couldn’t understand why I couldn’t
make them look like magazine photoshoots.
Client: Why did you use
the same photograph for each one of the plastic buckets we sell?.
Me. Aren’t all of the buckets the same make and color?
Client: Yes, they look the same, but they are different sizes. You’ve used
one picture for all of them.
Me: Yes, because the page will load more quickly if we use one image thirty
times instead of using thirty different images that all look identical.
Client: But you can’t tell the difference between any of them.
Me: But they are basically identical, aren’t they?
The photographs you sent are so small that it’s impossible to make out any
detail. The dimensions are in the product name.
Client: You should be able to do some magic computer stuff with them. That’s
what I’m paying you for.
Me: No, it’s not. You’re paying me to build the website, not take
photos. I’m putting some of your products in as examples.
Client: Can’t you come here and take photographs yourself? It would
Me: I’m not a photographer. I know some good photographers. Do you want
me to get one to call you to arrange a visit?
Client: Would they ask for money?
Me: Of course, it’s their job.
Client: I don’t want to pay someone else, you should do this as part of
your job. We need to see that they’re different sizes.
Me: We could just have one bucket product with options for size and color.
Then we would only need one good image for each bucket color. The differences
in size are very small, aren’t they, just a half inch?
Client: But how will people know we do more than one size!
Me: They will click on the bucket product in the waste and accessories
categories and see all of the options available.
Client: I would never do that! Nobody will know we do more than one
bucket! My business will collapse if we do this!
Me: So you want me to take thirty photos of buckets that are identical
except for the size, upload all of the them to your website, do the same for
the blue and green buckets as well, for no additional pay?
Client: Yes. It would be stupid to do it your way.
