Me: What kind of website do you want?
Client: Don’t know.
Me: Did you have a general look of the site in mind? Perhaps you like things on other websites and wanted to incorporate that into your own?
Client: Dunno. I don’t want other people to sell what I’m selling
Me: …um Okay… do you want your website to be on one page or do you want multiple pages so you can have things like an About Us, Contact Us etc?
Client: Whatever you think.
Me: (sigh) Do you want an online shop?
I made a basic site and then turned my attention to the shop.
Me: How do you feel about adding the products yourself? With the way your products are always in and out of stock, I don’t have the time to do this 24/7 unless you want to keep me on retainer.
Client: I certainly can’t do that, I’ll do it myself.
Almost a week goes by:
Client: Can you add these products for me, it’s too difficult. I can do the rest I just can’t add them.
Me: Okay… how many in total do you want added?
Client: All of them from these 3 sections from a website
Me: …That is around 100-200 products per section meaning you wanted me to add 500+ products…
Me: I’ll do them for 50p per product since you’re a family friend.
I know, I know.
Client: Oh, that’s a lot of money. I don’t want to pay that much.
Me: It is a lot of my time to do for free, I’ve already saved you a lot of money on your overall website. Other quotes you had were a lot more expensive
Client: I know, that’s why I didn’t go with them.
In the end, they didn’t put up the shop. We launched the website, but it was basically just a landing page. Following the onset of COVID, they got in touch with me to restart the process. The products still need to be added and they also want me to document everything so they can do it themselves, they’ve avoided the conversation of payment so far, hoping I don’t mention it – and like all clients, they want it done now.
