I was offered a contract position with a client who managed a large business.
After he hired me, he gave me a tour of the extensive campus around the main offices.
We had just talked for about an hour about how my skills could fit with his goals, and how he grew his company over time. I found myself being thoughtful on the tour, absorbing the information around me.
Client: What do you think of all this?
Me: It’s really nice.
Client: OK, you’re going to need to give me way more compliments as I show you around. It’s important I feel good about this.
…. I didn’t know my job included managing his ego to that degree.
