I was building a website for a client a few years ago. About two-thirds of the way through I had to be admitted to the hospital unexpectedly and couldn’t reach any clients to update them on my situation. A few weeks later I got back in contact with everyone (who were mostly understanding) except one. They were mad, and I felt bad for them, so I gave the whole website to them for free except for the 10% deposit I took at the start.
We parted ways but I kept renewing the domain name for free since then (I guess I felt guilty about leaving them hanging all those years ago?). I just got charged for their domain name again and thought I’d try my luck sending the invoice their way. With COVID, the business has been tight, so even though it’s only a couple of bucks I need to charge for it.
No response except for a few days later they said they called the police and will report me to the commerce department and their lawyer will be in touch. Because I didn’t charge them for the domain in the past, they didn’t know I was still renewing it and thought they were just getting it for free. They won’t pay for it and instead want to sue for the registrant’s rights.
