I just became a freelance seamstress, and
decided it would be good to put an ad on Craigslist. I’ve followed CFH for a while, so I thought I would be somewhat prepared. I was
totally wrong, and my first client turned out to be a nightmare.
I communicate mostly via text.
Apparently, the client thought this was an excellent opportunity to tell
me about his day. I gave polite, short answers in the hopes that he would
stop, but apparently he took this for flirting and began sending me lewd
pictures of himself. I should have cut off communication right there, but
I needed the money.
A few days later, and after he had to
reschedule the appointment three times, I made it out to his house to do the
fitting. He turned out to be a body builder and needed spandex gym shorts
to be taken in and hemmed shorter. Easy enough. I told him what I
charged for each alteration, and each time he asked, “Can you do better?”
Afraid of losing his business, I ended up taking $15 off of what should
have been a $75 order.
I got home and began to work immediately.
To my horror, every pair of shorts were incredibly and disgustingly stained
and reeked of piss and shit. Like an idiot, I didn’t have him sign a
I worked on them anyway (after a quick run through the laundry).
I returned the shorts after he
(unsuccessfully) tried to haggle down the price again. I asked him to
keep our relationship on a professional level before and even made a point of
saying that I lived with my boyfriend, but that didn’t stop him from flirting
I was so uncomfortable. He recently
contacted me again for more work. Needless to say, I will never speak to
him again, nor will I ever work without a contract. Lesson learned.
