I was working as a contract Administrative Assistant with a well-known organization in the city. I thought it would be a good opportunity to make some connections and gain some valuable experience. The Administrator I was working under was pretty paranoid and vindictive, though.
She mentioned that the previous temp should have been fired. Great vibes.
Here’s an example of a disturbing experience I had with her:
Client: What happened to that file that the client should have e-mailed to us? I don’t have it in my folders on the Shared Drive. You didn’t delete it, DID YOU?
I was not aware of the file she was talking about, and I received tons of e-mails daily. I didn’t see the file that she was referring to in my folders, either. I let her know.
Client: I don’t know if I believe that. How could that file be missing? You know, we have everything that you do on our computers on tapes. Hopefully, you didn’t delete it on purpose.
OK, she was threatening me with going through the recorded computer history to see if I deleted a file on purpose?
I sorted through tons of shared file folders on the Drive was able to locate the file she had mentioned. It had accidentally been misplaced in another file folder by someone on the team. I sighed a breath of relief and let her know.
Client: Good. Now I don’t need to call the Temp company to let them know about this.
Nothing says “I respect you and the work you do” quite like random accusations and threats.
