Whilst conducting a training session with a client on a new piece of software, I came across a trainee who couldn’t get past the welcome screen. The screen prompt read, “Would you like to continue to the login page?”. I asked if she wanted to continue to the login screen to which she replied “yes”. So I instructed her to “…just say ‘yes’ then”.
The trainee then proceeded to lean towards the monitor and in a very determined tone, literally said, “YES.”
“I understand that you don’t work on weekends, but I have a very special circumstance. I spoke with my astrologer, and she’s assured me that my site MUST launch on the weekend of the 25-26th, or bad things will happen.”—
“Look, I don’t even want to do this project. God is telling me to create an online community for Christians. I’ve never even been on the internet, and I never will! So buck up and do what God needs you to do!”—Client response to why he hasn’t paid my contract deposit
I was rounding off an Instant Message chat with a German client. I intended to say “Let me know if I can help further”. Instead, my clumsy fingers typed and sent the following before I could stop myself:
Client: I think you need a business lesson. You have no idea how to establish prices. You already have a studio so you don’t need to add in this studio rate. It only takes a few seconds to snap a picture so you can do that on the same day you set up the lights and stuff, making your day rate and your production fee redundant. This usage fee is totally unnecessary. People just show pictures on the internet. There’s no need to charge for wear and tear like that. This unnecessary stuff wastes time you could use to be productive. If you worked efficiently you could do my whole website for a third of what you quoted.
Me: My fees are competitive. You’re welcome to get other quotes for comparison.
Client: No, I like you. We’ll just cut this quote in half and I’ll stick with you until you learn how to run a successful business.
